3 Massive Questions Facing Tennessee Titans For 2024 NFL Season

The Tennessee Titans have been one of the busiest teams in the NFL this offseason, revamping their roster for a playoff push in 2024.

But have the Titans done enough to jump back into postseason contention?

Tennessee went just 6-11 this past year and appeared to have a long way to go, but it has truly done a remarkable job of making itself look like a solid team heading into this coming season.

The Titans play in a very competitive AFC South, so it will be tough, but the good news is that Tennessee should at least be able to hang with the other three teams in the division.

Here are three massive questions facing the Titans as they prepare for a redemption arc.

How much better will the offensive line be?

Tennessee’s offensive line was a major area of weakness last season, but the Titans have taken some big steps to address the issue over the last several months.

First, they signed the best center on the market in Lloyd Cushenberry. Then, they selected offensive tackle JC Latham in the first round of the NFL Draft.

You also have to assume (or at least hope) that second-year guard Peter Skoronski will have a better year after a rather tumultuous rookie campaign. It’s important to note that Skoronski was a tackle in college and moved to guard on the professional level, so he deserves a grace period. Plus, he did show some flashes in 2023.

Is Tennessee’s offensive line elite? Probably not, but it should be a cut above last season’s unit which was easily one of the worst in the NFL.

If the Titans can at least be passable in the trenches, it will make a world of difference for an offense that ranked just 28th in the league this past year.

Can Tony Pollard adequately replace Derrick Henry?

While Tennessee did have quite a haul in free agency, it also lost running back Derrick Henry, who had been a fixture in the Titans’ backfield since entering the league in 2016.

But for all of the talk about how much Tennessee will miss Henry, the four-time Pro Bowler is clearly declining, as evidenced by the fact that he averaged just 4.2 yards per carry in 2023.

The Titans signed Tony Pollard to replace Henry, and while Pollard didn’t exactly have a great season with the Dallas Cowboys last year, he has posted back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns and will be joining a group that already includes the up-and-coming Tyjae Spears.

Will Pollard be able to replicate the overall success Henry had in Tennessee? Almost certainly not, but he should at least have the capability to represent a decent option for the Titans, especially in tandem with Spears, who showed significant potential this past season.

Can Will Levis take advantage of a fine group of wide receivers?

The most important player for the Titans heading into 2024 is quarterback Will Levis.

Levis made nine starts during his rookie campaign last season, and while he was impressive very early on, he faded pretty quickly and posted a rather uninspiring eight passing touchdowns to go along with an 84.2 passer rating overall.

Tennessee liked Levis enough to select him in the second round of last year’s draft, and with great size and a cannon for an arm, he does seem to have rather significant potential.

The Titans made some big moves in their receiving corps this offseason, signing Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd in free agency. Those two additions will join DeAndre Hopkins to comprise a rather fearsome trio of wide receivers, although there are definitely questions about all three players.

Ridley had an issue with drops last year with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Hopkins just posted his first 1,000-yard campaign in three years and Boyd is aging and isn’t quite the same pass-catcher from several years ago.

Still, on paper, Tennessee’s stable of receivers looks good. There is an obviously high ceiling here, and it’s up to Levis to take advantage of it.

If Levis can develop a strong rapport with his receivers right out of the gate in 2024 and can limit his mistakes, it should spell great news for the Titans moving forward.

Should Levis struggle, Tennessee has free-agent acquisition Mason Rudolph—who experienced a modicum of success with the Pittsburgh Steelers—waiting in the wings.
