3 Reasons The Philadelphia Eagles Will Disappoint Again In 2024

The Philadelphia Eagles pulled off one of the quickest rebuilds in NFL history. In the span of five seasons, the team managed to get to the Super Bowl with a different face at quarterback, head coach, number one receiver, and other important roles. However, the season following their return to the Super Bowl was marked by a second-half decline unlike few in recent NFL history.

Unfortunately for Eagles fans, the 2024 season might not look much different than the second half of the 2023.

Here are three reasons why the franchise will struggle once again in 2024.

1. Jason Kelce’s retirement kills Tush Push

The Tush Push went as Jason Kelce went. Teams across the league attempted to duplicate the play, but all of them failed. The mechanics of the play rested heavily on Kelce’s shoulders. Specifically, it was his ability to generate a push up the gut for just a yard or two that would almost always result in a first down.

However, with Kelce gone, the odds of the move returning appear to be nil. Of course, some may argue that it was the scheme, but the star player at the center of the scheme is no longer present.

Without the Tush Push, fans can brace for even more struggle as the Eagles attempt to continue the short-yardage play but get stuffed, killing more drives early in the year than usual.

2. The move for Saquon Barkley was overhyped

Saquon Barkley has seen a lot of hype as a result of how things went down on “Hard Knocks” this month. However, hype precedes disappointment 100 percent of the time.

With Barkley arriving in town, fans are excited to see arguably the biggest star on the Giants work with their rivals. However, the Giants let Barkley walk for a reason.

The running back will be heading into an age 27 season. Despite being on the correct side of the age 28 cutoff, the back has already logged two years that ended prematurely by injury. As such, he is on track for a quicker decline, which is likely to start at some point this season.

Plus, with the retirement of Kelce, it will be much harder to pound the rock up the middle by default, minimizing Barkley before his season begins.

3. Jalen Hurts has disappointed more than surprised

Mathematically speaking, if one were to roll a die with each of Hurts’ previous seasons placed on each side, they would only have a slim chance of landing on an impressive season. As such, the odds are historically stacked against Hurts that he will avoid disappointment in 2024.

In 2020, he disappointed with a 1-3 record. Then, in 2021 he went 8-7, which was encouraging for a second-year player coming off a 1-3 record. However, if he were to finish with that in 2024, it would be seen as a disappointment. In 2022, he destroyed expectations by taking the team to the Super Bowl. This would be the only side of the die that avoids disappointment.

Then, in 2023, he went 11-6 but finished the year on a disappointing 1-5 skid. Based on this alone, Hurts and the Eagles are in for another year performing below expectations.
