Atlanta Falcons Acquire Former First-Round Pick in Intriguing Trade

The Atlanta Falcons have done a lot of work with their roster this offseason on the offensive side of the ball. After the Arthur Smith era was marred by underwhelming quarterback play, the team was aggressively filling the position this offseason.

Veteran Kirk Cousins was signed in free agency and should be a big upgrade over Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke, who started last season. They doubled down on quarterbacks and selected Michael Penix Jr. out of Washington as well.

There are some excellent skill position players around them as well. In three straight years they selected tight end Kyle Pitts, wide receiver Drake London and running back Bijan Robinson with top 10 picks.

In free agency, Mack Hollins left for the Buffalo Bills, but they brought in several replacements. Darnell Mooney, Rondale Moore and Ray-Ray McCloud were all signed.

However, it wouldn’t hurt to add some more depth to the position, especially since Moore has already suffered a season-ending injury. That is part of the reason Ian Valentino of The 33rd Team has shared an intriguing trade idea for them.

Valentino has pitched that the Falcons make a deal with the Tennessee Titans centered around former first-round pick, wide receiver Treylon Burks. In exchange, Atlanta would send the Titans a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

“The 2022 first-round pick has not found his stride in a run-heavy offense, and he’s now buried on the depth chart once the Titans get healthier.

Burks is a great athlete but an inconsistent football player. After losing Rondale Moore to a season-ending injury in the preseason, Atlanta has to take whatever it can get to upgrade its WR3 situation for Kirk Cousins. With new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, the Falcons should run a creative offense that can manufacture advantageous touches for Burks like the Rams did when Robinson was on their staff.

The other options for Atlanta are shockingly bad. Burks can at least play a role on a team with playoff expectations,” Valentino wrote.

This is a deal that Burks would likely be happy to see get done. As Valentino noted, he is no longer in the immediate plans of the franchise after being selected as A.J. Brown’s replacement in 2022.

DeAndre Hopkins and new additions Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd are all ahead of him. He would be competing with Nick Westbrook-Ikhine for the backup jobs behind them.

With the Atlanta Falcons, the path to playing time is a lot easier to envision. Burks could slide right into the No. 3 role once he learns the offense.
