Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is widely viewed as one of the best players in the NFL, and thanks to his ability to rack up touchdowns both through the air and on the ground, he is a Fantasy Football stalwart.
But could that change in 2024?
Allen’s average draft position is 16th overall, making him the first quarterback off the board most of the time. Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport thinks that is a bit too high for him.
It’s not that Davenport doesn’t think Allen is a great signal-caller or that he isn’t a fine pick for Fantasy Football rosters. He just isn’t sure he is going to replicate the 15 rushing touchdowns he had in 2023, as that was more than he accumulated in 2021 and 2022 combined.
Plus, the Bills subtracted both Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis this offseason, leaving Allen with a very questionable receiving corps. Buffalo did sign Curtis Samuel, and it also selected Keon Coleman in the second round of the NFL Draft, but the wide receiver position is an unproven area for the Bills.
So, essentially, there are numerous variables that could ultimately result in Allen having a relatively disappointing season, particularly from a Fantasy perspective.
How will Josh Allen manage the Bills’ offense in 2024?
For the last four seasons, Allen has had Diggs at this disposal. It resulted in Allen throwing over 30 touchdowns in three straight years between 2020 and 2022, and last season, he recorded 29.
Prior to Diggs’ arrival, Allen had thrown 30 touchdown passes total in a pair of campaigns.
Now, in Allen’s defense, those were his first two seasons in the NFL, so that comes with a bit of a caveat. However, it remains to be seen how he adjusts to life without his No. 1 receiver.
Losing Davis hurts, too. Davis was far from a superstar, but he represented a durable No. 2 option for Allen the last several seasons.
The Bills are probably hoping that Coleman will eventually become the No. 1 guy, but expecting to establish himself in that role right off the bat is wishful thinking.
Buffalo does have a pair of good tight ends in Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox, and Allen seemed to forge a nice rapport with Kincaid last season. Plus, James Cook was quietly one of the most productive running backs in football this past year.
We’ll see if Josh Allen can overcome some adversity come September.
