Chiefs Urged To Sign Intriguing Free Agent Veteran Wide Receiver

The Kansas City Chiefs have an 8-4 record, and many still feel they have an excellent shot at returning to the Super Bowl for the fourth time in the last five seasons. In fact, many still feel they’re the favorites to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl.

But there are also reasons to be concerned about Patrick Mahomes and company. With Tyreek Hill long gone and JuJu Smith-Schuster also in the past tense, the team lacks a reliable and consistent threat at wide receiver. That deficiency was on display in crunch time of their loss on Sunday to the surging Green Bay Packers, as well as late in their defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 11.

While tight end Travis Kelce continues to put up impressive numbers, their second-leading receiver is rookie Rashee Rice with 591 yards. While Rice has seemingly gotten better as the season has progressed, he simply hasn’t been enough of an answer.

Bleacher Report suggested that Kansas City take a chance on Kenny Golladay in order to fill some of that void.

NFL News & Rumors: Kenny Golladay, Kansas City Chiefs Updates

“The Chiefs are obviously among the select few teams that are going to be favored to lift the Lombardi at the end of the season,” Bleacher Report wrote. “However, the inconsistency among their receivers is concerning. Rashee Rice seems to be separating himself, but they’ll need more than him and Travis Kelce to step up in the postseason.

“There’s some irony to proposing Kenny Golladay to address inconsistency, but the options are limited and Golladay has two 1,000-yard seasons on his resume. If he can’t contribute on a team with Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, then he truly is done in the league.”

Golladay was a third-round draft pick in 2017 by the Detroit Lions, and in his second season, he posted 1,063 receiving yards. The following season, he produced 1,190 yards and an NFL-high 11 receiving touchdowns, which earned him a spot in the Pro Bowl.

Just prior to the 2021 season, he signed a fairly lucrative contract with the New York Giants as a free agent. However, in two years there, he totaled just 602 yards and one touchdown in 26 games, and it became clear he wasn’t a wise investment for New York.

If the Chiefs are to win their third Vince Lombardi Trophy of the Mahomes era, they will likely have to do so with a patchwork crew on offense. However, Mahomes is a magician, and if there’s one quarterback in the league right now who can win with an offense held together with spit and bubble gum, he’s the one.
