The Dallas Cowboys have still not come to an agreement on a contract extension with quarterback Dak Prescott, which has some wondering if it will ever get done.

On Thursday, Prescott provided an update on the situation that may set Cowboys fans at ease.

“I’d say they’re working,” Prescott said of talks, via Schuyler Dixon of The Associated Press. “I don’t know if that’s necessarily the time line. I can’t say, ‘Hell, I’ll put a timeline to [vice president of football operations/football administration] Todd [Williams] and Stephen [Jones] if we don’t get this done, this or that, but I know they’re working.”

Prescott is entering the final year of his deal and is rumored to be seeking an average annual value in the neighborhood of $60 million.

The 31-year-old went on to indicate that he prefers to remain in Dallas long term.

“I’ve never played the game for [money],” Prescott said. “I play the game for the pure love, for the guys in that locker room. This game has always brought me something that not a lot of things in life do. That’s the type of peace it does, being out there between the lines with people you share a brotherhood with.”

When will the Dallas Cowboys get a deal done with Dak Prescott?

The Cowboys are running out of time to strike a pact with Prescott before the regular season. Dallas will play the Cleveland Browns in Week 1 this Sunday, and chances are, the two sides won’t be able to close the gap within the next few days.

However, there is a chance that the Cowboys can get something done with Prescott during the 2024 campaign.

Working on a contract in the middle of a season is never ideal, as it can distract the player and the organization from the primary task at hand.

But in the case of Prescott, Dallas may make an exception.

Prescott is coming off of a fantastic 2023 season in which he led the NFL with 36 touchdown passes, finishing second in MVP voting.

He also led the Cowboys to an NFC East division title and a third straight 12-win campaign, but once again, Dallas disappointed in the playoffs, losing to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round.

The Dallas Cowboys have not made it past the Divisional Round since January 1996, and Dak Prescott has won just two playoff games himself.
