Looking ahead to the 2024 NFL season, the Dallas Cowboys have a lot riding on their success or lack thereof. There are many reports swirling around that Jerry Jones could make some massive franchise-altering moves if the team does not win the NFC East or at least make a deep run in the playoffs.

After a brutal blowout loss in the Wild Card round of the playoffs last season at the hands of the Green Bay Packers, many fans and analysts expected the Cowboys to have an aggressive offseason approach. Instead, they have been anything but aggressive.

Dallas appears ready to mostly run it back with the same group they had last season, minus a couple of players. It was a weird strategy and one that has left fans and analysts alike scratching their heads.

One position of need that the Cowboys currently have is running back. Ezekiel Elliott is projected to be the starting running back and there is no real big potential behind him. That has led some to believe that the Dallas Cowboys could consider pursuing a running back trade before the 2024 season gets underway.

Dallas Cowboys Urged To Make Running Back Trade With NFC Team

Dallas Robinson of Pro Football Network recently suggested an intriguing trade for the Cowboys. He thinks they should pursue a trade for Arizona Cardinals running back James Conner.

Here is the trade that he suggested the two teams make before the season arrives:

Dallas Cowboys Receive: James Conner

Arizona Cardinals Receive: 2025 Sixth-Round Pick

If the Cardinals would accept that trade offer, the Cowboys should jump at the opportunity to acquire Conner. He is a very underrated running back and would instantly compete for the starting job.

During the 2023 season with Arizona, Conner ended up carrying the football 208 times for 1,040 yards and even touchdowns. Those numbers average out to an impressive 5.0 yards per carry. He also caught 27 passes for 165 yards and two more touchdowns.

At 29 years old, Conner would be a big addition to the already talented Dallas offense. Even more, he only has one year left on his deal, which is the 2024 season. The Cowboys would not be making an investment long-term with this trade, but it would instead be a move to help them compete now.

This is the kind of moves that Jones and the Cowboys’ front office should pursue. They don’t need to go out and spend huge to get a superstar running back. Instead, they should focus on a productive back who can be had for a low cost.

All of that being said, this is a hypothetical suggestion that has no real legs to it. The trade would make sense, but for now we’ll just have to view it as a great idea that would be a good fit.
