New Orleans Saints starting quarterback Derek Carr suffered an injury against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The New Orleans Saints fell to 2-3 on Monday as they suffered a 26-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football. After starting the season so impressively — winning their first two games after notching the 40-point mark — the season hasn’t gone smooth since then.
Now on a three-game losing streak, the Saints could be without starting quarterback Derek Carr, who suffered an injury in the primetime matchup. He left the matchup against the Chiefs in the fourth quarter with an oblique injury, which he will soon have an MRI on.
There’s potential the Saints could be dealing with a loss under center after three-straight games of poor results.
Carr talks about injury following the loss
When talking after the game, Carr was quite blunt about how he was feeling.
“Not good,” Carr explained. “We’ll get an MRI and all that kind of stuff tomorrow, and figure it out.”
After three straight losses, New Orleans is walking into a big matchup. Their next opponent is a division rival, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers are coming off a tough defeat themselves, and the Saints need to get back on track. Will Carr be good to go?
“You know me, I’m going to do anything I can to be there,” Carr continued.
On the night, Carr completed 18 of his 28 passes for 165 yards, adding two touchdowns and an interceptions. It wasn’t an impressive night, by any means.
“I would have done anything to stay out there and keep fighting, but I just, I couldn’t,” Carr said. “So (it) sucks.”
Saints back-up quarterback options after Carr’s injury
Carr isn’t ruled out for next week’s contest, but the Saints would be smart to be prepared to play a backup quarterback.
Against the Chiefs, when Carr left the game, quarterback Jake Haener entered the contest, completing two of his seven passes for 17 yards.
Haener was the Saints’ fourth-round draft pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The other option would be Spencer Rattler, a rookie out of South Carolina. He shined, at times, in preseason.
Still, Haener entering Monday night’s game for Carr suggests he will be the one to go, should the starter not be available next week. The backup quarterback, also a Fresno State product, compiled 9,120 passing yards and 68 passing touchdowns in college, with just 18 interceptions in that four-season span.
Rattler, on the other hand, was a five-star prospect who transferred from Oklahoma to South Carolina, where he finished his five-year collegiate career with 10,807 yards, 77 touchdowns and 32 interceptions.
