Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence became eligible for a contract extension this offseason, and his representatives have apparently been talking with Jaguars brass about a new deal.
But is Lawrence worth it?
Former NFL wide receiver Plaxico Burress isn’t so sure.
Burress thinks that Lawrence is probably a top 10 quarterback in the NFL, but that he isn’t truly elite. He adds that he does think he will get his money, but isn’t so sure he will play up to the level of his contract.
The Super Bowl champion adds that he does not see Jacksonville making the playoffs in 2024 and has the Jags finishing in third place in the AFC South behind the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans.
Burress also expressed concern over the fact that the Jaguars lost wide receiver Calvin Ridley in free agency, although he does have incoming rookie wide out Brian Thomas Jr. winning Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Trevor Lawrence Has Been Overrated
There is no question that Lawrence is an overrated quarterback right now. At least by some.
Part of that is because he was selected by the Jaguars with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft and was considered one of the top quarterback prospects in years. Another reason for it is because Lawrence actually had a very strong sophomore campaign.
But outside of his impressive 2022 season, Lawrence has been very ordinary.
He threw 12 touchdowns and a league-worst 17 interceptions during his rookie year, and this past season, Lawrence totaled 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns and 14 picks while completing 65.6 percent of his throws and posting a passer rating of 88.5.
To be fair, Lawrence did have injuries later in the year, but he wasn’t playing particularly well when he was healthy, either.
Jacksonville was 8-3 at one point in 2023, but lost five of its last six games and missed the playoffs.
Of course, Lawrence did throw for 4,113 yards, 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions during his famed 2022 campaign, leading the Jags to a surprising playoff appearance and even guiding them to a thrilling Wild Card Round win over the Los Angeles Chargers.
But the 24-year-old should be judged by his entire body of work, and through three seasons, it isn’t overly impressive.
We’ll see if the Jaguars end up extending Trevor Lawrence before the 2024 campaign begins.
