Aaron Rodgers will have a new head coach for the final weeks of the season after the New York Jets fired Robert Saleh on Tuesday.

This was supposed to be the season for the New York Jets to put everything together.

Aaron Rodgers was finally back in action after his infamous injury in Week 1 of the 2023 season and the former Green Bay Packers quarterback was expected to spearhead a strong Jets season.

The season has already started unraveling though with the Jets now sitting at 2-3 after Sunday’s defeat to the Minnesota Vikings in London.

Rodgers has been involved in ‘awkward’ moments with Robert Saleh and the Jets offense has stumbled through the last couple of games.

Saleh has now paid the price with his job as the former San Francisco 49ers defensive co-ordinator was abruptly fired by Woody Johnson on Tuesday.

New York Jets defense react to Robert Saleh firing

The Jets have been through some terrible head coaching reigns in recent years but none of them were axed mid-season.

Robert Saleh has gone though with the Jets now promoting defensive co-ordinator Jeff Ulbrich promoted as interim head coach.

Whether the Jets can salvage the season remains to be seen but it’s clear that Johnson and co felt that firing Saleh was the only way to get back on track.

The Jets defense have been left stunned though having actually performed strongly under Saleh.

Saleh is a defensively-minded coach and his defense held the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots and New York Giants to 10 points or less this season.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz now reports that members of the Jets defense are ‘shocked’ by Saleh’s departure.

Despite a testing couple of weeks, Jets players seemingly didn’t believe that Saleh was on the verge of losing his job.

Saleh will have built strong relationships with members of the Jets defense, so his sudden departure will certainly leave some players upset.

Jets still chasing Davante Adams

Many will argue that the problem wasn’t only the defensive side of the ball.

Rodgers turned in a poor performance against the Vikings on Sunday and the Jets have seen him throw just two passing touchdowns across the last two games.

Maybe Rodgers feels that he needs more firepower on offense and that brings wide receiver Davante Adams back into the conversation.

Adams wants out of the Las Vegas Raiders and a reunion with his former Packers QB Rodgers has been rumoured of late.

Jets fans will wonder whether Saleh’s firing puts any trade for Adams in jeopardy.

However, Schultz claims that the Jets still want Adams – and Adams wants to play for the Jets.

This appears to be another potential move to appease Rodgers but the veteran QB has to step up his own play – or major question marks will be asked about his time in New York.
