The Indianapolis Colts are heading into the 2024 NFL season with hopes of getting back into playoff contention,

After coming up just short during the 2023 campaign, Chris Ballard and company chose to bring back most of their in-house talent. They added a few players from outside the roster, but they spent most of their offseason money on retaining their own talent.

Clearly, the Colts feel that they have a roster talented enough to develop into being a contender.

A lot of their future hopes will rest on the development of second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson. He has legitimate superstar potential, but he has to develop and also stay healthy. If he can do those two things, Indianapolis will get a lot better from within.

Heading into training camp, there will be a few position battles to watch as players try to earn their roster spot. One intriguing battle will come at tight end.

Indianapolis Colts Could Cut Fan Favorite Offensive Player

The Colts have a lot of talent at the tight end position. They have Jelani Woods, Kylen Granson, and Mo Alie-Cox who will be competing for a roster spot and playing time.

ClutchPoints believes that the team could end up cutting Alie-Cox, who has been a fan favorite for the past few years.

“Not only is Alie-Cox not producing big numbers, but he is also the most expensive tight end on the Colts’ roster. He is set to earn just under $6 million next season. But, Indianapolis could waive Cox this offseason without him affecting their cap sheet.”

During the 2023 season with Indianapolis, Alie-Cox ended up playing in 17 games. He caught 13 passes for 161 yards and three touchdowns on the year.

Clearly, his role has diminished to a point that moving on from him wouldn’t impact much. He does offer a very nice red zone target for Richardson.

Standing in at 6-foot-5 and just under 270 pounds, Alie-Cox is a very large human being. He creates mismatches against opposing linebackers due to his size and athleticism. The former basketball player is more than capable of going up and getting jump balls.

While he has a skill-set that will land him another job, cutting him would make sense for the Colts. He’s not better than either Woods or Granson.

All of that being said, it will be interesting to see how training camp and the preseason go for Indianapolis. They have a lot of players battling for roster spots and Alie-Cox will be one of them.
