The most significant coaching change made during the NFL offseason is undoubtedly the hiring of Jim Harbaugh by the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Chargers have actually seen players immediately embrace the coach’s philosophy, indicating that Harbaugh’s hiring has already begun to have an effect on the group.
A number of former and present Chargers players have already expressed their high regard for Harbaugh. Easton Stick, the team’s backup quarterback, is the most recent player to compliment the head coach.
Stick spoke with Dom Izzo on Hot Mic about the forthcoming 2024 NFL season and described how, once Harbaugh was appointed head coach of the Chargers, his desire to rejoin the team increased.
“I told my agent that I wanted to stay there after he got the job, even though I knew I would be a free agent. I want to play for him,” Stick said. “You can tell that a lot of guys feel that way. Every day in OTAs, Khalil Mack is there, taking every rep and pressuring the passer hard. He just walks into the room with so much credibility. He is obviously coming off an undefeated national championship season and has won everywhere he has gone. Yeah, he’s got street cred.”
It is only a matter of time until Harbaugh’s influence extends to the other players on the roster and to the league at large if he is already having that kind of effect on Stick.
Soon, Harbaugh should transform the Chargers into a team that elite players want to play for in order to win, rather than just to cash in on a huge salary.
What are the expectations for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2024 with Jim Harbaugh?
The Chargers looked terrible on most occasions last season. Still, Harbaugh is expected to instill confidence in the players as they prepare for the new campaign.
NFL teams will begin training camps in a few weeks’ time. This is the time of year when every team feels like they have gotten better and many are certain that they can win the Super Bowl. But given that Harbaugh hasn’t been an NFL coach in the past 10 years, a sudden turnaround may be unrealistic for Los Angeles.
Harbaugh could help the Chargers earn a postseason berth in 2024, and from there, anything can happen, but it may be a bit too ambitious to expect the club to contend for the championship.
Whether it was his first season or later, Jim Harbaugh has overturned the fortunes of every team he has coached. For this reason, he should be able to help the Chargers in the long run.
