New Eagles Playmaker Could Be a Disappointment In 2024

The Philadelphia Eagles will be heading into the 2024 season with a chip on their shoulder. In the 2022 season, they represented the NFC in the Super Bowl. Last season, they started 10-1 before the wheels fell all the way off.

In 2024, they will be on a mission to prove that they are closer to 2022 and that 2023 was a blip on the radar. Getting the defense back on track would certainly help accomplish that.

But, the offense has some questions to answer as well. One of those questions is, who will emerge as the No. 3 wide receiver?

The Eagles have an incredible duo in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. But, beyond those two, they have gotten virtually zero production from any other wide receiver on the roster.

One of the players who will be looking to fill that void this season is Parris Campbell. Campbell had a career year in 2022 with the Indianapolis Colts but was a flop in 2023 with the New York Giants.

New York’s entire offense nosedived with starting quarterback Daniel Jones getting hurt and the offensive line performing at an abysmal level. Moving to the more functional Eagles offense would presumably do him wonders.

Things can’t get worse than the 20 receptions for 104 scoreless yards Campbell produced in 2023. But, Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report doesn’t believe that he will live up to the hype in 2024.

“There will be less pressure to perform in Philly. The receiver hierarchy is well-established at this point, but staying healthy and actually winning the No. 3 job are far from guarantees.

The Eagles have interesting rookie options in Ainias Smith and Johnny Wilson and there are always free agent options that become available during roster cutdowns,” Ballentine wrote.

For the Eagles to take their offense to that next level, a third wide receiver emerging is a natural progression. They have a formidable top three when adding tight end Dallas Goedert to Brown and Smith, but there is a reason things stalled out as they did in 2023.

Campbell has the talent to be that third option the team has craved. His skill set fits in well as a speedy option out of the slot.

But, as Ballentine noted, health has been an issue at times for Campbell. There is also no guarantee he is the No. 3 receiver heading into the regular season, as he will be challenged by others for the role.
