The New England Patriots seem to be headed towards a quarterback change after a slow start to the season.
The New England Patriots are in for a big change. They are 1-4 on the season and their offense has been a major issue. They’ve also got a rookie quarterback on the bench who could give the club a fresh look at that position.
With three straight home games coming, if the Patriots are going to salvage their season, now is the time to do so.
Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett has completed south of 60 percent of his passes and has only scored two touchdowns to go along with his one interception this season. The production through five games simply won’t cut it.
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo hints at quarterback change
With rookie quarterback Drake Maye on New England’s bench, it might be time for the North Carolina product to get his shine on the field. The No. 3 overall pick would give the offense a fresh look.
Jerod Mayo is going to give Sunday’s contest a rewatch before determining who will start moving forward.
“Look, we’re still going through the, you know, the film from yesterday. We’ll see how it goes,” Mayo explained.
This has been a change of pace from what Mayo has previously said. He’s typically stuck to his gun in stating Brissett is the team’s starting quarterback. Now, that’s no longer the case. On Monday, Mayo was blunt about the veteran quarterback’s play.
“It just wasn’t good enough,” Mayo said. “I thought we played well enough defensively and on special teams to win the football game. Look, as the quarterback — and he understands this — he touches the ball on every single play and we didn’t win the game or score enough points to win the game. I think he would echo that same sentiment that it wasn’t good enough.”
What Drake Maye could add to Patriots offense
Maye isn’t a veteran player. He’s an unproven rookie quarterback. There will be a fire he will play with because of that, even if he might not be fully ready to take control of the offense. For a team that’s 1-4, having a player come in an establish a culture certainly wouldn’t hurt.
There is a risk and a reward with this decision. With a corrupt offensive line, the Patriots are running the risk of Maye taking big hits and getting injured. However, he’s got much more arm talent than Brissett. The passing game would become much more of a threat, potentially opening up some running lanes.
Team’s have to be built to bring in a rookie and allow them to thrive, and New England hasn’t done such. However, Maye would certainly improve the team’s passing attack.
How the Patriots approach the quarterback situation moving forward will certainly be a storyline worth keeping an eye on. The team next hosts the Houston Texans — a 4-1 club — which would be throwing Maye into the fire should he start.
