New York Giants Likely To Pursue Move At This One Major Position

The New York Giants made a lot of changes during the 2024 NFL offseason to upgrade their roster. They lost some talent, such as running back Saquon Barkley and safety Xavier McKinney, but added a good amount as well.

Offensively, they used the No. 6 overall pick on LSU star wide receiver Malik Nabers. In free agency, Devin Singletary was signed to help offset the loss of Barkley.

Drew Lock was signed to compete with Daniel Jones for the starting quarterback position. The offensive line had two major additions, Jermaine Eluemenor and Jon Runyan Jr. to shore things up.

Defensively, the biggest splash was adding pass rusher Brian Burns. He was acquired from the Carolina Panthers in a trade and followed it up with a massive contract extension.

Alas, the team may not be done adding talent to that side of the ball. According to Dan Duggan of The Athletic, the first two episodes of Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants has provided a hint at a major move that could be on the horizon.

“The lack of investment at corner continues to stick out while reviewing the early stages of the offseason.

If the Giants are going to spend a chunk of their $11.7 million in cap space on a player, cornerback sticks out as the position most likely to receive an investment,” Duggan wrote.

There are several recognizable names available in free agency that would fit the bill. Former Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore stands out, as does former All-Pros Patrick Peterson and Xavien Howard.

All three would present the New York Giants with major upgrades in the secondary. The team loves 2023 first-round pick Deonte Banks, but there isn’t much established talent behind him on the depth chart.

The team took fliers on veterans, David Long and Tre Herndon. But, in a perfect world, they would be depth pieces, not players Big Blue wants to rely on as starters.

Keep an eye on the New York Giants early in training camp. If none of the younger guys stick out, they could look to bring in a veteran to shore things up. Waiting could also result in the price tag coming down.
