The Philadelphia Eagles have taken some criticism in recent months for how the 2023 season ended, but one season does not define an era.
At least, that is what NFL analyst Craig Carton appeared to declare on Tuesday’s edition of “The Carton Show.” , Carton handed Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman perhaps the best compliment an active general manager could get.
“The Philadelphia Eagles might have the best general manager in football,” Carton stated.
Of course, the keyword is “might.” It was not something Carton set in stone, but even to utter the second half of the phrase is a telling compliment.
According to 97.5 The Fanatic, Roseman became the Eagles’ general manager in 2010. Since then, the team has gone on to reach two Super Bowls and five playoff appearances.
However, it wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows. Between 2010 and 2016, Roseman’s team reached the playoffs just twice, losing in the Wild Card round both times.
Many agree the first half of his current tenure was a tough watch for fans. However, Roseman managed to pull off some of the most difficult feats a team could fathom in the last roughly half-decade.
Since 2017, Roseman has managed to put together a team that could defeat Tom Brady in the Super Bowl with a backup quarterback. He then transitioned away from both the backup and starter from that season, and got back to the Big Game within the next five seasons.
Most franchises have never pulled off such a feat. Those few teams that have done so often have taken decades.
Howie Roseman handles offensive reload in 2024 offseason
While much of the spotlight has been on Howie Roseman’s greatest rival, the Dallas Cowboys, the Eagles general manager has been busy.
According to Spotrac, AJ Brown received an extension through the 2029 season, setting the team up with a clear foundation. However, the Eagles’ offensive line was dealt a significant blow.
Jason Kelce walked away from football this offseason, generating questions about who will be charged with keeping Jalen Hurts clean. ESPN believes Cam Jurgens will slide into the role, but considering the change will be fresh for the quarterback and the line, it remains unclear how smoothly the transition will work.
At running back, the team elected to hand over starting duties to Saquon Barkley. Barkley had previously run against them with the rival Giants. Some called it the steal of the offseason as they managed to weaken the Giants and also keep Barkley from joining the rival Cowboys.
Of course, with the season still months away, the true effect of Howie Roseman’s 2024 offseason decisions is unclear. But, he is well deserving of the notice he is receiving.
