Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson was able to hold off Justin Fields for the starting quarterback job. The two were embroiled in a competition all offseason, but it was the veteran who was able to hold on.

Just days before the regular season is set to begin, Wilson had another impressive title bestowed upon him. He was named one of the team’s four captains for the season.

“He’s a strong leader, and he brings veteran experience,” said Miles Killebrew. “He’s been doing it at a high level for a long time and I think with that experience [he] kind of calms nerves, and he can lead guys through various situations because he’s seen it. He’s seen a lot, so just a calming presence, I would say.”

Killebrew was one of the other captains along with defensive stalwarts, defensive tackle Cameron Heyward and edge rusher T.J. Watt.

Wilson was unable to participate in parts of the offseason program and training camp because of a calf injury, but his track record speaks for itself. The experience that he brings to the table played a big part in why he won the job.

“Russ’ resume is a unique one in terms of lift and success, and that tends to play a factor in the decision-making, but not from a decision-maker’s perspective,” Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said. “It’s just the fruit of his labor. He’s seen a lot and done a lot, and I think it was reflected in the way he played and conducted himself.”

Throughout recent history, whoever the starting quarterback for Pittsburgh has been, they are one of the captains. Kenny Pickett, Mitchell Trubisky and Ben Roethlisberger were all captains during Tomlin’s tenure.

Killebrew, Heyward and Watt know what being named a captain for the Steelers means. A special teams ace, Killebrew was picked for the third consecutive season. This is the 10th straight for Heyward and fourth for Watt.

“On the offense side of the ball, there’s a lot of leadership that was needed,” Heyward said. “And I think he’s ready for that. We’ll see how he does, and if he has questions, ask me, T.J., Miles.”

There is some pressure on Wilson to help kickstart what has been an underwhelming Pittsburgh Steelers offense the last few seasons. Expect them to lean on the running game and his athleticism until a No. 2 receiver can emerge behind George Pickens.
