Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith Out With Undisclosed Injury

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith has missed each of the team’s last two practices and may very well end up being sidelined for a third straight day.

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald provided a rather vague update on Smith on Thursday.

“He’s working through a couple of things from the other day,” Macdonald said, via Gregg Bell of The News Tribune. “Get some imaging tonight and we’ll see.”

Macdonald hinted that Smith could be out yet again on Friday.

“I don’t know about [returning to practice] tomorrow, but we’ll see what comes out of it when he goes to see the doc,” Macdonald said.

Macdonald did not specify exactly what is wrong with Smith, although he was getting work done on his hip and knee on Wednesday.

How much longer will Geno Smith be with the Seahawks?

The Seahawks signed Smith to a three-year contract extension last offseason, but that was under the direction of Pete Carroll.

Seattle has entered a new era, as it will not be coached by Carroll for the first time since 2009.

The Seahawks parted ways with Carroll after last season and hired Macdonald, who seemed somewhat non-committal to Smith earlier in the offseason.

Macdonald’s rather lukewarm attitude toward Smith is not at all surprising. A first-year head coach taking over a team that did not make the playoffs the year prior typically wouldn’t be too fond of a 33-year-old quarterback, particularly one that isn’t exactly elite.

Smith was terrific in 2022, throwing for 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while leading the league in completion percentage (69.8 percent) and posting a 100.9 passer rating.

However, last year, the veteran signal-caller took a rather significant step back, finishing with 3,624 yards, 20 touchdowns and nine picks in 15 games.

The West Virginia University product is certainly still serviceable, but he is probably not the way you want to go if you are a team likely preparing to enter some sort of rebuild.

The Seahawks traded for Sam Howell earlier in the offseason, but whether or not the team actually views him as the long-term answer under center remains to be seen.

We’ll see if any more updates come along on Geno Smith’s health as training camp progresses.
