Steelers Predicted To Trade For Former Pro Bowl Wide Receiver

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in serious need of depth at wide receiver behind George Pickens. Right now, there is a whole lot of unproven talent at the position, which could spell trouble for Russell Wilson in his debut campaign under center.

That’s why many feel that the Steelers will end up trading for a wide out at some point in the near future, and Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine feels that Denver Broncos receiver Courtland Sutton could represent a potential target.

Pittsburgh absolutely make sense as a destination for Sutton in the event of a trade, as a Pickens-Sutton duo would actually be pretty formidable.

Of course, the Broncos have to actually be interested in moving Sutton, and at the moment, the don’t appear to be trending in that direction.

Why the Broncos may be holding on to Courtland Sutton

Much to the Steelers’ chagrin, there are actually multiple reasons why holding on to Sutton may be a good idea for Denver for the time being.

First of all, the Broncos just drafted Bo Nix to play quarterback. While Nix may not start immediately, he will almost surely get some playing time in 2024, and Denver does not want to throw him to the wolves without any weapons at his disposal.

Second, Sutton is actually under contract through 2025, so the Broncos don’t have to be in any rush to trade him. He is making $13 million in 2024 and is slated to earn another $13.5 million in 2025. That’s a pretty team-friendly contract given Sutton’s production.

That being said, things could certainly change.

If Denver is out of playoff contention by the trade deadline (which is a distinct possibility) and another receiver-needy team (like Pittsburgh) comes along and offers a substantial package for Sutton, the Broncos may just decide to pull the trigger.

However, it does not seem very likely that Denver will trade Sutton in training camp, which is what Ballentine is projecting.

Sutton caught 59 passes for 772 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. He made the Pro Bowl back in 2019 after hauling in 72 receptions for 1,112 yards and six scores, but then proceeded to tear his ACL in Week 1 of the following year. While he has remained productive, he hasn’t been the same since.

We’ll see if the Steelers approach the Broncos about a possible deal.
