Steelers QB Russell Wilson Receives Ominous Take For 2024

The Pittsburgh Steelers offense has not been able to consistently generate production since Ben Roethlisberger retired. Looking to shake things up, the franchise brought in Russell Wilson, overhauling their quarterback depth chart.

2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. Mitchell Trubisky was waived earlier in the offseason. Mason Rudolph was a free agent and signed with the Tennessee Titans.

Along with Russell Wilson, the team acquired Justin Fields in a trade with the Chicago Bears. But, it is Wilson who is the starter heading into training camp.

Is that an arrangement that will last for the entire season? Joe Tansey of Bleacher Report certainly doesn’t believe so.

In a recent piece, Tansey highlighted three Steelers players who will not live up to the hype in 2024. One of the players that were selected was Russell Wilson.

“Wilson not only carries the internal pressure to be better than last season, but he also faces external pressure from Justin Fields, who himself is looking to prove he can still be an NFL starter…

Wilson maybe has one more good season left in him, but we may not see that with Fields waiting in the wings to take over,” Tansey wrote.

A lot has been made about the disastrous tenure Russell Wilson had with the Denver Broncos. Acquiring him and then signing him to a massive extension is one of the worst moves in NFL history; his extension didn’t even start before he was released.

Alas, a lot was working against him in Denver. His first season was with Nathaniel Hackett as head coach, who was disastrous and in over his head. In year 2, his head coach, Sean Payton, was actively attempting to move on from him.

Along with the bad coaching fits, Russell Wilson played behind a sieve of an offensive line. He was sacked 100 times in two seasons and 30 games.

With the Steelers, the supporting cast around him is lightyears better. Mike Tomlin is as good as it gets as a head coach and Arthur Smith has had success as an offensive coordinator previously.

The lack of a No. 2 receiver behind Pickens is a concern, but tight end Pat Freiermuth is an excellent pass-catcher. He could function as the No. 2 target, with Van Jefferson, Quez Watkins, Calvin Austin III and rookie Roman Wilson filling in behind Pickens at wide receiver.
