The New York Jets just put out one of the best wins the franchise had seen in years. It wasn’t a battle against Tom Brady or Bill Belichick, but beating the New England Patriots logo like the Jets did created a sense of satisfaction decades in the making.
With the Patriots defeated and the Jets heating up in their second consecutive victory, it is time to put the Jets on an exclusive list in the AFC.
Here’s why New York is a Super Bowl contender.
Tom Brady and Peyton Manning did it
Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning are three names that fit together in the same bucket. The three quarterbacks come from the last era. However, two of them wrapped their careers with Super Bowl wins on a different franchise than the one they started with.
Manning won a Super Bowl with the Colts and then the Broncos. Brady won six Super Bowl rings with the Patriots and won his seventh with the Buccaneers.
With two recent precedents already on the books, Rodgers winning a Super Bowl with the Jets would not be uncharted territory in the NFL. Brady won the Super Bowl in his first year with the Buccaneers, throwing the “time” argument out the window.
New York Jets’ budding offense and defense
The Jets’ offense hasn’t cracked 30 points yet, but the team has proven to have a unique mix of talent. Garrett Wilson was the assumed star heading into the season. However, Braelon Allen, Allen Lazard, and Breece Hall have stepped up.
On the other side, New York has a defense that has stopped all but the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers this season. The result is a team that has proven to be able to avoid turnovers and play better situationally than their opponents.
That is what the New York Jets have needed for the last few quarterbacks. That is now what they have with Aaron Rodgers.
